“Best tasting”??
Brussels sprouts? Cauliflower?
Not IMHO. To me, they border on OK when drenched in melted cheese and/or real butter + proper seasoning and washed down with adequate alcohol.
The whole smells bad thing has obvious cultural biases. Those foods you grew up with generally have smells that you either like or grew to appreciate.
I remember an older Laotian guy who used to come to my ER years ago. He ate a lot of fish and consequently his body smelled of fish/the sea when he would come in. Conversely Americans smell like rotting flesh to a lot of Asians due to our meat consumption.
All of the foods that are listed have distinct strong orders but since they’ve been in my diet forever I don’t consider them “bad”. Ditto for many cheeses.
There’s a distinct difference between smelling of live fish vs smelling like dead fish. Maybe not a cultural bias? But to me, accusing others of cultural bias stinks. The bias of being cultured?
Yah, some crazy cheese i can’t remember the name of… sauer kraut can smell bad or good depending on what brand or if it’s homemade. But, as CRAZY as it seems to sound to nearly everyone I mention it to, I don’t like bacon and it stinks terribly and lingers forever!!! Yes, steamed cauliflower smells bad, but damn it’s absolutely delicious, as long as not over cooked so that it’s mushy. It needs some life left in it. And if you’ve never tried it, splash some plum vinegar on it for an amazing flavor explosion!! Salty and sour in a most amazing way!
Well, not the best tasting, but pretty good: kim chee.
@Kyeh I came here, earlier this day, to say the same. Though I think a ripe kimchi is pretty tasty…
@bee1doll
Oops, I spelled it wrong. I like it but I don’t tend to have it around. I guess it’s super healthy though!
Dungeness crab. Has kind of a funk to it but soo good. The first time I had snow crab I was like “did someone take all the flavor out of this?”

@phendrick
So you’re firmly in the “something else” camp then?? Care to elucidate on what that something else might be??
Durian?
@kittykat9180
Never had the “opportunity”(?) to try it but probably would.
@chienfou
Same
@chienfou @kittykat9180 I tried durian ice cream once. That was close enough; it’s not for me, thank you.
@chienfou @Kyeh
Because of the flavor or the odor?
@chienfou @kittykat9180 It tasted kind of like something spoiled, to me - like fruit that’s sweet but starting to rot.
Not sure I consider those “worst smelling”?
There’s plenty of cheese that smells worse, but taste amazing (to some).
Many Asian ingredients and dishes smell “bad” to people, but tastes fantastic!
Like Japanes natto (fermented soy beans).

Pad thai. Smells like wet dog, but possibly the best tasting dish anywhere on this planet.
I’m gonna go with boiled eggs. Who doesn’t appreciate a hard boiled egg for its simplicity and tiny protein package…but they smell like farts, tbh!

Canned sardines - smell fishy but put one on a Ritz cracker, squirt on a little Sriracha and yum!
@macromeh I bet you’d like these, then. They have a preserved lemon version that I really like. They’re pricy though so I buy them on sale when I can.

@macromeh
I recently learned that Portuguese people eat a lot of sardines. I bought a small ceramic bowl with painted sardines in it in Porto.
I also think the sardines wins for smell but taste great.
If it smells bad, it tastes bad.
That being said, if prepared right, none of these choices have to smell bad.
